The charitable arm of PowerTech — The Power to Give — gives back to the community all year. The holidays are especially important, as we express gratitude for what we have, including food, the roof over our heads and gifts to give our children, and at the same time do our part to help those in need.
Recently, the team again helped out at New Visions Homeless Services’ annual holiday celebration. The event has been going strong for 27 years! It provides a celebratory and safe atmosphere to allow families in need to receive food — bags of turkeys or prime rib and more — or other staples for children, like diapers, books, or toys. Parents can even go home with wrapped gifts to give children without the kids having to know any details.
Many parents were in tears, telling the PowerTech team they didn’t have enough money for food, let alone presents from Santa their children could be joyful about. Kids could pick out stuffed animals for themselves, and parents received presents as well. Everyone deserves a lift, especially during the holidays.
“It’s by far my favorite event we do here with the Power to Give,” says Tara Vogel, PowerTech’s accounting manager. “It is so great to see the families experience some happiness during the holidays.”
The holiday giving event helps as many as 3,200 families in only a few days. This year, the line of cars stretched back a few blocks. Each family was greeted by Santa, with the Christmas music pumping, blow-up decorations and a festive, fun filled atmosphere. Other businesses across the community also volunteered.
The turnout was particularly special because of the weather — it was barely 27 degrees for the day’s high.
“It reminded me that most of us have so much to be thankful for, including a warm place to live,” Vogel says. “Giving back to the community on a cold day is the least most of us can do. I love being a part of PowerTech and the Power to Give.”
